The first body of Mounted Police in Australia was formed by Governor Brisbane in 1825. In 1907, the Mounted Police Unit was transferred to the Police Depot, Redfern. Today, the Mounted Section is the only remaining Police Station in New South Wales continuing with Mounted Police.
In 1995, the Sydney Mounted Police Stables Museum was introduced to provide the visual display of the proud history of the unit. The Mounted Police conduct free tours of the section which include a walk through the museum located on site. The tours usually take 1 hour. You will be provided an overview of the history of the section and a look at the daily life and running of the stables. You may be able to watch a horse being exercised if there are officers riding horses at that particular time. You will meet and greet the troop horses personally and be informed of the training and requirements for both horses and police. Tour guides are more than happy to answer any questions you may have throughout the tour. Feel free to bring carrots to feed their horses if so desired.
