Connect Coaches Connecting People With Morpeth

Morpeth

a town with a rich history, was established by Lieutenant E.C.Close in the early 19th century.

He developed it as a river port and built his house, Closebourne, on the property.

Over time, more buildings were constructed, including St James's Church and a bond store by James Taylor.

However, the construction of the Great Northern Railway diverted attention away from Morpeth, and the town lost its commercial significance.

Despite this, Morpeth has managed to preserve its history and heritage.

Today, it is a popular tourist destination known for its historical buildings and picturesque river bank setting.

Experience the charm and beauty this town has to offer by exploring its many historical landmarks.

Brief History of Nelson Bay:

Nelson Bay is a charming coastal resort town, located at the mouth of Port Stephens.

With approximately 5000 residents, it strikes a balance between tourism and maintaining its authentic charm.

As the largest town in the Port Stephens area, Nelson Bay is easily accessible, situated 223 km north of Sydney and 69 km from Newcastle.

Sitting at 18 m above sea level, the town's origins remain unknown, but it is believed to have some connection to Governor Macquarie's visit in 1812.

Chinese fishermen established a base here in the 19th century, contributing to the local economy through fishing and trade.

Nelson Bay saw significant development in the late 1960s when developers arrived, but fishing remains an important part of its identity.

Brief History of Newcastle:

In September 1797, Lieutenant John Shortland accidentally discovered the Newcastle area while searching for convicts who had taken control of HMS Cumberland. He named the river he found after Governor John Hunter and reported the presence of a deep-water port and abundant coal. This coal became the first export of the New South Wales colony. During World War II, Newcastle played a crucial role in Australia's industrial effort, though it was briefly shelled by a Japanese submarine with minimal damage and no casualties. Today, the Port of Newcastle is the economic center for the resource-rich Hunter Valley and much of northern New South Wales. It is the world's largest coal export port, handling over 3,000 shipping movements and 95.8 million tons of cargo annually, mainly coal. Environmental groups oppose efforts to increase coal exports.
