Strickland House Heritage Tour - Thursday 31st October, 2024
Join a NSW National Parks guide on a fascinating tour of the house and grounds of Strickland Estate. Perched on the waterfront of Sydney Harbour in Vaucluse, Strickland House is of exceptional historical significance. It's a remarkably intact 1850s villa, with a largely unaltered landscape setting.
The original villa Carrara (as it was formerly known) was built in 1856. It's a prime example of an early Victorian Italianate style mansion, designed for a picturesque setting. This is one of the better known domestic works of the 19th century architect John Hilly, who also designed St Patrick's Catholic Church.
After being home to leading figures in Sydney, Strickland House became a women's convalescent home in the 20th century, then later an aged care facility.
